A quality all volunteer Army must consist of troop units commanded and staffed by professionals, officers expert in their business. The essay inquires whether officers, during their mid-career years, spend enough time with troops to become fully qualified. The study sample consists of a group of Infantry officers considered for promotion to colonel in 1971. It is considered that modified assignment policy is the key to rapid amelioration of professionalism problems.
