The purpose of the study was to compare the effectiveness of several methods of acquiring data on the nontherapeutic use of drugs by Army personnel. Data were collected by means of an anonymous questionnaire, a randomized inquiry technique, and a card-sort procedure. Subjects totaled approximately 1,100 enlisted men, noncommissioned officers, and junior officers, both Vietnam veterans and men without such experience. The sample was obtained from four Army posts between September and November, 1971. Modified author abstract
