Abstract:

Intrinsically motivated activities are ones which a person does for no apparent reward except the activity itself or the feelings which result from the activity. There has been very little research and theorizing which considers the topic of intrinsic motivation, yet there is a substantial amount of literature which relates to the topic. The report draws together a wide variety of researches in that category. Most of it was not originally reported within the framework of intrinsic motivation, yet the paper reinterprets the work within that framework. It considers several approaches of accounting for intrinsically motivated behavior drive naming optimal incongruity and optimal arousal reduction of uncertainty and competence and self determination. The approaches are discussed, compared, and to some extent integrated. Author
