Abstract:
During the heating of metals with high-power-density lasers, the undesirable phenomenon of thermal runaway occurs which leads to the destruction of the workpiece. The objective of this research program has been to secure information which will provide a basis for understanding the processes involved in thermal runaway. This was done by studying various parameters of the high-temperature, magnesium-oxygen interaction using specimens which were heated by infrared radiation to temperatures approaching or exceeding the melting point of magnesium. Heating was performed in oxidizing atmospheres at controlled rates up to 115C per second. Author Modified Abstract
