Abstract:
The main investigative effort has been concentrated in two closely related directions. The first is concerned with the robust estimation of the location of the center of a symmetric distribution. The approach to this problem has been to investigate theoretical and empirical refinements of an adaptive estimator previously proposed by the principal investigator. The second problem area considered is concerned with the robust estimation of a specified quantile reliable life for non-symmetric life distributions not specified in parametric form. The results demonstrate the essential irrelevance for this problem of the sort of large sample optimality considerations appropriate to the symmetric case, and alternative approaches suitable for finite sample sizes are explored.
