The subject of software reliability is introduced and current methods are examined. Theoretical techniques which attempt to prove program correctness are described and their limitations noted. The problems encountered in evaluating and validating large programs are investigated, and an initial step toward automatic validation is presented in the form of an Automated Software Evaluation System.
