Field-Replaceable Rotor Blade Pocket Study

The purpose of this study was to design, fabricate, and test a field- replaceable pocket which could be utilized in any position along the span such as a universal pocket which could be attached with ambient- temperature nitrile- phenolic adhesives at field level to reduce cost and eliminate shipping time to CONUS. The adhesive qualification testing consisted of shear and peel tests under climatic conditions, and proof and fatigue tests of universal pockets attached to spar specimens with the selected adhesive. The study showed that the pocket design was universally adaptable to any of 27 positions on the blade and was structurally and aerodynamically adequate. Nitrile-phenolic adhesives provided acceptable bond strength under simulated field conditions.
