Habituation and its retention were studied in twelve adult chinchillas. Basal respiration, struggle activity, and head-shake response HSR all exhibited within-session decrement which recovered only partially within 24 hr. Complete recovery of the habituated HSR and basal respiration required more than 4 days. Potentiation of habituation occurred for struggle activity only. Neither transfer of habituation nor dishabituation, examined with the HSR only, was obtained. Differential sensitivity to concurrent stimulation was found between the various response systems. In addition, rates of habituation among response systems were uncorrelated. The combined results suggest that independent mechanisms within each response system underlie habituation. Author
