Abstract:
A sensitive and accurate automated method for the simultaneous measurement of methemoglobin and total hemoglobin blood levels is described. The method can be used for either continuous in vivo monitoring or intermittent sampling at a rate of 40 per hour. Standardization procedures are described, using both commercial bovine methemoglobin and human blood treated with potassium ferricyanide. Repeatability of both methemoglobin and total hemoglobin measurements expressed as percent of the coefficient of variation is within plus or minus 2 percent. Methemoglobin levels in normal humans and dogs did not exceed 0.55 gram per 100 milliliters 3.5 percent of the total hemoglobin levels. Author
