Abstract:

Aqueous solutions of urea and related compounds exhibit anomalous thermodynamic and transport properties which have been extensively studied, and rationalized by arguments based on the loosely defined concept of solution structure. Aspects of molecular order and motion which influence nuclear magnetic resonance nmr lineshapes and relaxation times are relatively well understood. In the paper, the authors report extensive measurements of nmr parameters for aqueous solutions of several ureas and amides, and raise the question of whether such measurements have predictive value in the sense of Emerson and Holtzer.
