Abstract:

Aging and surveillance programs have been performed with solid propellants since their inception. To obtain some feel for the long term aging behavior in a short time, accelerated aging performed at elevated temperature has been used. It has been found that no comparison can be made between accelerated aging results converted to long time equivalent ambient aging and the actual long term ambient aging data. A study of the chemical changes occurring in TP-H1011 propellant with age at four temperatures has been made. It has been shown that the reaction responsible for the propellant cure is essentially complete in one week. Studies with NMR and EPR spectroscopy indicate that reactions are occurring at the sites of unsaturation along the polymer chain with a high percentage of the reaction at the pendant vinyl group. The reaction rate has been determined by following the change in gel found in the binder. A correlation of the mechanical properties and chemical changes has been made.
