Abstract:
The author studies the early time hydrodynamic structure of a buoyant fireball model. The problem of a buoyant sphere of fluid in a sea of heavier fluid is formulated in terms of one-dimensional integro-differential equations. A numerical solution to these unstable equations which involves approximating the boundary between the two fluids by a polygon is presented. The numerical approach involves no stabilizing or damping parameters and appears to give a satisfactory solution up to the time the buoyant sphere begins to pass from a kidney bean shape to a jelly-roll.
