Abstract:

In recent years considerable progress has been made in our theoretical understanding of one of the most spectacular phenomena of the physical world, namely the occurrence of phase transitions in bulk matter in thermal equilibrium. As is well known experimentally, when the temperature of a system is raised it may undergo a sudden transition, usually from an ordered state of some sort to a relatively disordered state, and often with a discontinuous change in its properties. One would like to be able to grasp, and, if possible, predict the nature of a transition in terms of the microscopic interactions between the constituent particles. The report presents a numerical analysis of this process using the Ising model, Continuum fluid models, and Quantum systems.
