An attempt was made to produce more definite data on the behaviour of venous tone during and after immersion. A new immersion equipment was constructed which allows lowering of the subject into the tank together with the carefully adjusted recording equipment. The recording properties, power of resolution and dependability of the plethysmographic equipment using Whitney gauges had to be checked. In the course of these experiments valuable information was gained about the properties of the low pressure system of the circulation as well as the efficiency of various agents known to increase venous tone. In isolated homogeneous circulatory beds the question of the relative role of filtration and delayed compliance in their effect on the pressure volume relationship was investigated.
