The complete solution for stresses and displacements of an elastic truss may be found by direct solution of the defining equations or by using either of the elastic minimum principles. From both a theoretical and computational approach, the three methods are very similar. Three related methods are available for elasticperfectly-plastic trusses, but here they are quite distinct. It is shown that none of the three is entirely satisfactory, but that a combined method leads directly to a complete solution. In the proposed method, the static minimum principle is first used to find the stress rates and stresses, and some information from the stress solution is fed into the kinematic minimum principle to obtain the velocities and displacements.
