An objective approach to describing aircraft sound levels for areas in the vicinity of airports called Aircraft Sound Description System ASDS, suitable for both manual and computer application, is set forth. The basic premise of the concept is to state exposure to aircraft sound in terms of the amount of time that sound levels exceed a preselected threshold value. The rationale supporting the selection of this procedure, the selection of the threshold value, as well as some operating time constants are covered together with two hypothetical applications.
