Abstract:

A shift register is a device with a number of identical information cells connected in series. Under the control of clock pulses, information in each cell is shifted to the adjacent cell. One common construction of a shift register connects conventional clock controlled flip-flops in series. The research described in the thesis concerns a class of devices that can be used in shift registers and was initiated by the discovery of the charge transfer property in the cells of the Plasma Display Panel. By using the charges deposited on the glass wall to store the information and the charge transfer mechanism to transfer the information, the plasma cell array should be able to perform the function of a shift register. The principles of the Plasma Shift Register can also be demonstrated by a circuit with coupling capacitors and charge transfer elements. Feasibility has been demonstrated in both the plasma device and in a solid state device in which the charge transfer elements are transitors operating in the avalanche region.
