Test and Evaluation of Loose-Fill Cushioning Materials.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relative properties and to identify the limitations and suitability of loosefill cushioning materials for packaging applications. Both polystyrene and cellulosic type loosefill materials were evaluated. Accomplishment of the study required modification of standard test methods or development of new methods in an attempt to adequately describe the characteristics of loosefill cushioning materials. Based upon the results of the evaluation, loosefill materials are not recommended for the protection of items whose static bearing loads are greater than 0.45 psi or whose fragility value are less than 50 Gs. The comparative analysis between polystyrene and cellulosic type loosefill indicates that although cellulose exhibits similar cushioning, it is four times more costly to use than polystyrene.
