The purpose of the contract is the development of a low cost air electrode for medium temperature 130C immobilized phosphoric acid matrix fuel cell. Thin carbon electrode structures were to be fabricated and catalyzed with the minimum amount of platinum which produced a H2-air cell performance of 0.6 volt cell terminal voltage 0.65 volt versus H2 reference at 80 mAsq cm, after 500 hours operation. By using special techniques of electrode manufacturing and catalyst application, a reduction of the Pt amount to a level of 1 to 2 mg Ptsq cm was accomplished. Long-term testing of these electrodes has shown that the chemical and mechanical stability of the catalyst and structural material are good. X-ray fluorescence was used to determine the distribution and the amount of catalyst actually deposited. Author Modified Abstract
