Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of Australia antigen in volunteer blood donor recruits, Vietnam returnees, and known drug abusers. Australia antigen Au was detected in the blood sera of 3013,421 0.22 new US Army recruits, 194,795 0.40 Vietnam returnees, and 19772 known drug abusers. The data show that the Au persistent carrier state is not associated with clinical hepatitis. Au was found more frequently in Vietnam returnees. However, when the drug abusers were not included in this group the frequency rate was not significantly different from that of the volunteer blood donor recruits. The implications of the findings are discussed. Author
