Abstract:
The purpose of the program was to determine the feasibility of, and the parameters for, explosively cladding A1S1 4130 steel liner to the inner diameter of an expended 5 inch diameter gun barrel. The initial work consisted of developing the parameters for cladding flat plates later these parameters were expanded to include cylindrical cladding of expended portions of 5 inch diameter gun barrels. Seven experimental tests were conducted using expended gun barrel portions. These tests proved the feasibility of gun barrel cladding.
