Mixed Region Collapse in a Stratified Fluid.

The collapse of a homogeneous fluid mass immersed in a vertically stratified fluid is studied analytically. Simple approximate theories are given for initial and intermediate stages of the process and the predictions agree well with a previous experiment. The theory shows that a previous approximate solution of the problem is deficient. The energy content of the mixed region versus time is traced the mixed region gives up most of its energy to the surrounding fluid in one Brunt-Vaisala period. Author
