Five relatively distinct approaches to computer modeling of the fluid like aspects of nuclear-explosion phenomenology in the upper atmosphere are compared, with heavy emphasis laid on the problems associated with constructing a successor code to RANC. Each of the five methods is scored on 16 indices comprising four general criteria survivability, validity of results, ease of use, and required computer resources. Highest overall scores were obtained by the system-like approaches to analytic and quasi - analytic modeling. The lowest scores were obtained by the detailed physics approaches. Author
