The report summarizes the results of research carried out on solar wind interactions. Following a brief review of the knowledge of the solar-wind magnetosphere interaction the report describes contract-supported research in the following four categories Solar-WindMagnetosphere Interaction at the Magnetopause Structure and Dynamics of the Magnetospheric Tail Magnetosphere-Ionosphere Coupling and Substorm Theory. The first two categories include both theory and satellite-data analysis the last two include theory only. An attempt is made to evaluate the contribution of these results to the attainment of the theoretical-empirical framework necessary to devise a routine procedure for the prediction of geomagnetic activity, by means of satellite-monitoring of upstream solar wind conditions andor parameters in the magnetospheric tail.
