Variability of Intensity Ratios of H to He and He to C,N,O in Energetic Solar Particle Events.

Explorer 35 data on energetic solar particle events show that intensity ratios of H to He palpha and of He to Z or 3 ions alphaM in the sub-MeV specific energy range epsilon or 0.5 MeVnucleon vary from event to event and more especially during the time history of individual events. Ranges of observed values are 10 palpha 90 and 3 alphaM 27. The interpretation emphasizes two interplanetary propagation effects as principally responsible for the observed variability of the intensity ratios of the various ionic species a differential diffusion and b changes in intensity and spectra caused by reflection of diffusing particles by propagating magnetic discontinuities.
