The ships supply support study developed a fleet supply support simulator in which supply support dollar outlays may be related to fleet capability. A critical assumption made in the development of the simulator states that the availability of an item at a given echelon is independent of its availability at other echelons. A computer model of a single item multi-echelon supply support system is constructed. A day by day history of the status of each entity in the system is obtained along with an in and out of stock profile for the item by calendar time at each echelon. Marginal availabilities and conditional availabilities are compared, and other measures of the degree of dependence of echelon availabilities are presented. Finally, the computer model is extended to consider a multi-item supply system and similar tests are made. Author
