The report summarizes spectroscopic studies of energy transfer in rare earths with particular attention devoted to transfer phenomena in multiply sensitized Er-TMHo3YLF LiYF4. Energy transfer was studied as a function of Ho3 and Tm3 concentration and temperature. A model for the Tm-Ho transfer versus Ho and Tm concentration is presented which predicts the observed dependence of the Ho lifetime and fluorescence yield on the TmHo population ratios and the temperature. The effects of the transfer phenomena on the 2 micrometer lasing efficiency of multiply sensitized HoYLF alpha beta LF are discussed.
