Abstract:

The influence of the geometrical form of a jet nozzle on the development of a free jet has been investigated. Far downstream the mean velocity profiles of W. Tollmien and H. Schlichting are characterising the jet independent of the nozzle geometry. Near the orifice, however, where the excitation of turbulence and noise as the re-shaping of the mean velocity profiles occurs, the nozzle contour and the initial conditions of the jet are of influence. The special case of a laminar jet boundary layer can be analysed to a certain degree and the results can be illustrated by measurements of the mean and fluctuating velocities as well as by streak line photographies.
