Abstract:
In the paper the authors attempt to provide the theoretical analysis that may be needed to aid intuition. The authors present some precise definitions of independence of two events which are known to be equivalent. Next presented are similar definitions of conditional independence which are not equivalent. The authors look in detail at seven different statements of independence relating two events with a third event and investigate the implications of the relationships among these statements. It is believed that the study of these relationships provides the necessary insight into the assumption of independence and the different kinds of independence involved. Author Modified Abstract
