Abstract:
The report contains the development of a theory for third harmonic generation THG due to a broad band optical pulses such as existing in the picosecond time region. The theory is than applied to several examples. Specifically, Maxwells equations are used as the starting point and a wave equation for the THG is developed for a uniform plane wave in a dielectric, isotropic medium. The material parameters considered are the nonlinear susceptibility giving rise to the third harmonic, the respective phase and group velocities, and the interaction length. Three examples consisting of a sine wave, a Gaussian pulse and a linearly chirped pulse are evaluated.
