The objectives were to determine if cell cultures of neuronal andor nonneural cells can be used to study the biochemical changes that occur during long term exposure of cells to drugs which become addictive and from which withdrawal reactions occur. The drugs chosen for study have differing pharmacological and addictive effects. The compounds are analgesics, narcotic analgesics, nonnarcotic hypnotic and sedatives aliphatic alcohol CNS active agents antihistamine. Experimental results are discussed.
