Abstract:
Recently it has been proposed that the U.S. Government develop small nuclear reactors for use in high-speed, general cargo vessels. It has been urged that, if the U.S. will bear the development costs, private ship operators will buy and operate the ships, and that this will serve the national interest as it relates to maritime matters. This paper argues that evidence presented by one proponent of the high-speed nuclear system is either based on misleading cost estimates, or not suggestive of commercial benefit from the development of the proposed reactors. In either case, the argument for development of the reactors is reduced in force. Further, it is argued that no convincing case has been made for any net benefits for this country to be derived from nuclear-powered cargo carriers. Author
