XIDE LASERSThe report gives the preliminary results of two in-house tasks involving the study of the use of CO2 laser communications systems for army tactical applications. The objective is to investigate the feasibility of unconventional approach for CO2 laser communications systems for army tactical applications, in order to overcome present system limitations in the areas of modulation, detection, and detector cooling. The final objective is to develop a design for a small, light weight, wide bandwidth, tactical CO2 laser communications system. The three frequency heterodyne detection system approach is described, a proposed experimental program and tests are discussed, and a comparison with conventional techniques is given. In addition, the report contains a summary of component state-of-the-art and atmospheric propagation effects on 10.6 micrometer laser radiation. Author Modified Abstract
