Abstract:

The authors give an upper bound for the determinant of a matrix with positive dominant diagonal and nonpositive off-diagonal elements. A lower bound is derived for the permanent of a nonnegative matrix with dominant diagonal. Conditions for equality are investigated. There are applications to stochastic, nonnegative, and M-matrices.
