Abstract:

The limited laboratory study was made to determine whether a method for quick-freezing and extracting soil samples provided more accurate determination of moisture content than did mechanical samplers, particularly for very wet soils. The quick-freezing was accomplished with liquid nitrogen poured into a hollow probe inserted in the soil. In tests on soils whose moisture contents ranged to well above the liquid limit, it was determined that accuracy with the quick-freeze method was almost as good as with the mechanical samplers. This conclusion was based mainly on reproducibility of results. The liquid nitrogen probe was used over a range of soil-moisture contents, the sampling of which normally requires use of three types of mechanical samplers. Author
