A finite-element program was composed and tested for analyzing the behavior of unidirectional metal-matrix composites under transverse loads of sufficient magnitude to cause yielding, flow, and failure. A model for filament-matrix interface debonding was designed and used to predict the behavior of transversely loaded unidirectional, 50-voBAl6061-O and -T6 and BeTi 6 Al-4V when such failure occurs. Brief studies were made of fiber shape elliptical versus circular and of plastic-zone growth from yield to failure in BAl composites. A tensile test on a specially prepared WAl composite was used to verify one calculation, and fabrication and testing of a BeribbonAl composite were attempted. Author
