A two-port helical delay line is described which produces 180 microsec delay with low cross-talk, on a bismuth germanium oxide crystal plate having face dimensions of approximately 1 inch by 2 inches. A design for a 12 millesecond delay line of this type on a larger crystal plate is presented. Work is described on helical waveguides for surface acoustic waves whose objective is to produce multi-millisecond time delays with low cross-talk. An electric field-shorting type of waveguide, using a thin deposited silver film in a closed loop on the surface of a bismuth germanium oxide wrap-around delay line, has demonstrated low propagation loss of .065 dB per microsec at 50 MHz.
