Abstract:

Y TUBE SCREENS, DESIGN, FEASIBILITY STUDIES, DIGITAL SYSTEMS, ELECTRON BEAMS, RESOLUTION, STANDARDS, PERFORMANCEENGINEERING, SCREENSDISPLAYS, AIRCRAFT EQUIPMENTAVIONICS, FLAT PANEL DISPLAYSA flat, thin CRT, which uses digital switching rather than analog deflection to position a beam, has been successfully demonstrated in a 512 x 512 element, 80 elements per inch format, thus meeting the objective of the program. This display device, the DIGISPLAY, was shown to be capable of scanning at TV rates 60 fields - 30 framessec. Operating in a simulated TV raster scan mode, the display has an average spot brightness of approximately 8 to 10 foot-Lamberts, a contrast ratio exceeding 32 to 1, and exhibited 4 discriminable gray levels. The four beam-scanning plates constructed for this program enable the device to be scanned by as many as 32 simultaneous writing beams.
