Abstract:

An exploratory program was conducted for the Army to evaluate the possibility of adapting some particular explosive drilling techniques to the problem of producing emplacements for atomic demolition munitions ADM. The approach consisted of introducing small encapsulated explosive charges into the bore hole which exploded and fragmented the rock at the bottom of the hole into particles that can be removed by any one of several spoils removal methods. Discussions are included of the design, development and testing of the explosive capsules, the means of introducing the capsules into the bore hole, and spoils removal techniques. The problems encountered and the solutions achieved or proposed are discussed. The results of the explosive drilling experiments are detailed and projections made as to the explosive requirements to produce an ADM emplacement.
