Abstract:

A unique computer program called PANDORA has been developed at the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory for the purpose of analyzing a wide variety of solar observational data to determine the temperature and density structure of quiet and active regions of the solar chromosphere. An extensive collection of extreme-ultraviolet solar data has been obtained from rocket and satellite experiments by members of the Harvard College Observatory, and the results are available for interpretation. The computer program was used to construct theoretical models consistent with the data. The resulting models provide information about the structure of the quiet chromosphere and some preliminary characteristics of the regions in which solar activity develops. Author
