Abstract:
A review of the present picture concerning the solar flare event is presented. Optical, radio, X-ray and particle spectra, their time-dependence and interrelations are discussed. A compilation of the chronology of the flare event is given. A flare model based on the recent work of Coppi and Friedland is analyzed with representative numerical data. The problem of the acceleration of protons to the very high energies observed is discussed and suggestions for new accelerating mechanisms resulting from strong plasma turbulence processes are put forward.
