A complex structure such as a vehicle is represented by a lumped parameter model. Using the finite element method, a set of equations of motion is formulated for this model. Then these equations are solved numerically by the Runge - Kutta method. A model for representing a specific vehicle, namely the M-37 military truck cushioned for an airdrop is used to illustrate the procedure. Some of the physical constants for the model are modified as required to bring the computed results of displacements and accelerations at various points in the model into agreement with measured values.
