Abstract:

Premixed natural gas-nitrogen-oxygen mixtures were introduced through a permeable frit and burned in a T-burner. Oscillatory combustion remarkably like that observed in a propellant-fueled burner was observed. In the range of ignitable mixtures, strong amplification was obtained in both lean and slightly rich mixtures, the two regions merging as diluent nitrogen was added. The effects of changing frequency and mass flow rate were also investigated. It is inferred that gas-phase kinetics may play a significant role in the oscillatory process. Author
