Abstract:

A study examining existing ocean data buoy instrumentation performance characteristics to determine realistic measurement accuracy was performed. Standard meteorological and oceanographic parameters as measured by instruments located aboard a discus shaped buoy were examined. Significant factors affecting measurement accuracy are identified and mathematically combined to determine a realistic error value performance estimate. Range, natural variability, measurement averagingfiltering, data sampling rate, measurement resolution, and sensorbuoy interactions are considered for each parameter. The performance estimate for each parameter reflects the selected instrument operating characteristics on an ocean data station buoy in a marine environment. Author
