In order to use the eighth order Gauss-Jackson second sum method for integrating second order differential equations it is necessary to provide the first eight points by some other means. It is common practice to use the classical fourth order Runge-Kutta process for this purpose. This process is, however, rather inefficient. By a suitable choice of parameters for a fourth order process it is shown that a nearly three-fold improvement in starting efficiency can be obtained. Author
