Abstract:

Four candidate repellents were evaluated on New Zealand white rabbits for their potential to cause skin irritation. The data obtained serve as a basis for making recommendations that are intended only for guidance in further entomological testing of the compounds. These recommendations do not constitute approval for testing on human volunteers. The repellents, 1-hexanoyl-4-pipecoline, 1-octanoyl-4-pipecoline, 1-hexanoyl-2-ethylpiperidine, 1-heptanoyl-2-ethylpiperidine ENT-35633-Ga, ENT-35635-Ga, ENT-35643-Ga and ENT-35644-Ga produced moderate primary irritation of the intact skin and the skin surrounding an abrasion. These compounds should not be used directly on the skin without a prophetic patch test having been conducted.
