Abstract:

Exact non-linear wave solutions have been obtained for a cold collisional plasma described by one-fluid equations of motion. By a suitable change of variables the equations become linear and hence easily solvable for the case of constant collision frequencies. The oscillation frequency is slightly reduced, but the maximum attainable field amplitude is almost unaltered. The wave profile is steepened and grows exponentially with a scale distance of the order of the wave displacement in a collision time. The essentially non-linear problem of velocity dependent collisions leads to a slower, algebraic growth. Author
