Abstract:
The general objective of the research is to conduct investigations that will contribute to the development of an ultrawide-bandwidth laser communication system. The specific objectives are a study of laser communication system configurations, particularly modulation formats, that are most suitable for very high data rates up to 2 Gbitsec, research on high- efficiency, single-frequency NdYAG lasers as the transmitter source for such a communication system, and research on an optical modulator with 2 GHz of rf bandwidth and good modulation efficiency. During the present reporting period, work has continued on improving the efficiency and ease of single-frequency operation of NdYAG lasers, together with work on the extension of the bandwidth of the optical modulator.
