A technique for measuring the beam profile of damaging laser pulses has been incorporated into the damage test facility. This technique utilizes an infrared sensitive television camera, a monitor, and a video tape. With this system more accurate and consistent measurements of surface damage thresholds should be possible. A series of experiments to determine whether absorption is important in surface damage is in progress. Speculations on the effect of electrostatic changing of surfaces on damage threshold are presented. Estimates indicate that application of electrostatic fields would be useful in determining damage mechanisms in some materials. Author
