A study was conducted to establish the existence of regions of microscopic shear inhomogenities resulting from cold working and to determine the interaction of such regions with the subsequent tensile fracture characteristics of the cold worked material. Using 1080 pearlitic steel as a vehicle of study, microscopic regions of intense shear deformation were observed to result from cold deformation. Metalographic examination of the tensile fracture behavior of this material in several conditions of cold work clearly establishes the interaction of deformation induced shear instabilities and the subsequent fracture characteristics of the deformed material.
